Shalom Partnership of Lancaster, Inc. - History

Shalom Partnership of Lancaster, Inc., began in 2000 as partnership of 3 local churches, St. Pauls United Methodist, El Redentor United Methodist, and Bethel AME Churches. We are a part of some 400 Shalom Zones around the country, begun soon after the difficulties in Los Angeles and the beating of Rodney King.  The United Methodist Church, at its General Conference, then in Los Angeles, decided it had to address that situation and developed the Shalom plan, which endeavored to improve neighborhoods around churches, with the church as a catalyst for change and the center for community organization.  IMG 1431

Our own partnership began with study, prayer and a number of gatherings.  From this dialogue grew a vision and mission for Lancaster.  The vision was cast of a healthy and just community where people sought justice, unity and wholeness, so that all individuals and the community prosper.  The mission of the Partnership, God being our source, Shalom Partnership of Lancaster, Inc. will partner with Lancaster schools in order to sponsor summer enrichment programs with elementary school children, with the intent that they continue learning and growing and eventually take their places in their communities as productive citizens.

The Shalom Partnership met with city, church and community leaders to identify the greatest need within Lancaster.  It was immediately obvious that the priority was city school students.
